Japan’s Tectonic Shift: Sweeping Out the "Old Boys" and the Post-War Legacy

The results of Japan’s House of Representatives election have been unveiled. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) alone secured 316 seats—surpassing the two-thirds constitutional amendment threshold (310 out of 465 seats)—while the ruling coalition achieved a supermajority of over three-quarters. This historic victory signals a tectonic shift in Japanese society and politics: the formal end of the traditional political model dominated by "old boys." Moving forward, Japanese politics will be driven by gender equality, youth, vitality, and professionalism.

Many veterans who failed to recognize the changing times lost their seats, with former Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada being a prime example. Ignoring the broad social trend of resisting Chinese expansion, Okada engaged in "obstructive" questioning of Sanae Takaichi in the Diet. He characterized established defense policies—such as those addressing "threats to Japan’s survival" and "fundamental subversion of citizens' rights"—as having "ambiguous concepts." By demanding that Takaichi withdraw her remarks after the session, he effectively confirmed that his pro-China stance was no mere fabrication.
Following his defeat, Okada avoided the core issues by blaming the "Takaichi Whirlwind," yet he dared not face the public will driving that momentum. As for the so-called "internet rumors," they not only stemmed from his own controversial pro-China rhetoric and his alienation from modern communication channels but also from his refusal to acknowledge the CCP’s role as a global architect of online influence (the "telling China’s story well" narrative). Similarly, Hiroshi Ogushi, who adopted a pro-China position to challenge Takaichi, also failed to win re-election.
This marks the beginning of a new political era in Japan, driven by social structural changes that are sweeping away "old-boy dominance." Japan is poised to stand tall against China and once and for all bid farewell to the psychological "war debt" of the post-war era. As Beijing’s customary "scolding diplomacy" loses its efficacy, and as Japan moves toward becoming a "normal state" with constitutional defense powers, how will Beijing respond?
