Clearly articulating positions becomes challenging when navigating
political campaigns, especially those entwined with cross-Strait issues in
Taiwan's presidential race. However, altering the language surrounding the cross-Strait
matter is particularly delicate.
Over half a century ago, the term "one-China" emerged, articulated
parallelly either through the U.S.'s "our policy" or Beijing's
emphasized "principle." This eventually transformed into an ambiguous
modus vivendi, a mid-term understanding known as the "consensus of
1992," leaving space for further negotiation for a comprehensive
agreement.
President Tsai Ing-wen emphasizes the separation, asserting that the PRC has
never governed Taiwan or the ROC for a single day. She makes it clear that the
ROC and PRC do not belong to each other, skillfully avoiding explicit mention
of the term "separation." This cautious and ambiguous approach leaves
Beijing with no apparent pretext.
However, in the midst of the ongoing presidential campaign, Lai adds,
"which is the definition of Taiwan independence," a more radical stance than the implication
“separation,” after Tsai's previous statement, "ROC and PRC do not belong
to each other." This addition might furnish Beijing with an excuse to
exert pressure on the U.S. and gain diplomatic leverage.
