According to Wiki, the Duchy of Lancaster is a private estate of the British sovereign. The estate has its origins in the lands held by the medieval dukes of Lancaster, which came under the direct control of the monarch when Henry Bolingbroke, the then duke of Lancaster, ascended the throne in 1399. In 1461, King Edward IV confirmed that the duchy would be inherited by the monarch, but held separately from the Crown Estate, the other assets which belong to the monarch.  The duchy of Lancaster is one of two royal duchies: the other is the duchy of Cornwall, which provides income to the Duke of Cornwall, a title which is held by the monarch's oldest son.

The United Daily News interprets the issue in a wrong way due to lacking the feudal culture here in Taiwan.  The monarch of UK owns three categories of properties:

1. Crown Property: This includes assets owned by the reigning monarch in their official capacity as the sovereign. The Crown Estate and the Crown Duchies fall under this category.
2. Royal Member Property: This refers to properties associated with the monarch's status as a member of the royal family. This may include residences and assets that are used for official or ceremonial purposes but are not part of the official Crown property.
3. Private Property: These are personal assets and properties owned by the monarch in an individual capacity, separate from their role as the sovereign or as a member of the royal family.

So it is nothing to do with greed.  It is all about history and establishment.

衛報報導，英國王室擁有的莊園，為王室帶來大筆收入，多年來一直將莊園涵蓋範圍內去世居民的「無主財產」收為己有，過去10年便有多達6100萬英鎊（約7666萬美元）。這筆資金僅有15%捐贈給慈善機構，其餘幾乎都用於翻新莊園內的房產和建築，讓王室獲取巨額利潤。

英國國王查理三世（King Charles III）擁有屬私人財產的蘭開斯特公國，這座莊園為王室帶來大筆收入。

報導說，在英格蘭和威爾斯大部分地區，居民去世後若未有立下遺囑作出分配、沒有親友繼承的「無主財產」可轉移至財政部，作公共服務用途，然而依照源自中世紀的習俗，英國國王查理三世（King Charles III）擁有占地約1.8萬公頃、屬私人財產的蘭開斯特公國範圍內，王室可收集所有「無主財產」。衛報調查發現，蘭開斯特公國過去10年收集的「無主財產」，只有15%捐給慈善機構。

調查指出，王室將這筆「無主財產」主要用於翻修莊園內的建築，包括度假屋、別墅和商業建築等，例如約克郡一座農舍經翻新後，已改造為供出租的高端住宅。另有一間農場的建築翻修後，已轉為商業辦公室對外出租。熟悉王室開支的人士承認，這筆財產為王室省了大筆資金。

受訪者批評稱，他們的朋友生前住在破舊的住所中，遺產卻被收歸王室，改建王室的高級建築，直指王室的做法「極不道德」。
