Japan to pay condolences to former Japanese Premier Abe Shinzo.  Lai kept his visit in secrete until he showed up at Abe’s residence.
It is not easy for Taiwan’s incumbent high-ranking officers to visit Japan, which fears pressure from Beijing and bans the visit since 1972.  This time, Japan did it oppositely for 50 years.
Meanwhile, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken flew from Bangkok to Tokyo on the same day.  We have a good reason to believe that Blinken arranged Lai's trip to show the world solidarity for US-Japan-Taiwan.
We also have good reason to anticipate that the US and Japan are accepting Lai as the DPP candidate for the 2024 campaign.

（台北中央社）頼清德（らいせいとく）副総統が11日、安倍晋三元首相の死去を受け、弔問のために訪日した。台湾から日本を訪れる当局者としては、1972年に中華民国（台湾）と日本が断交して以来、最高位となる。

与党・民進党の郭国文（かくこくぶん）立法委員（国会議員）が明らかにした。郭氏によれば、頼氏は蔡英文（さいえいぶん）総統の命を受けて訪日した。

総統府の張惇涵（ちょうじゅんかん）報道官は同日、頼氏は安倍氏やその親族と長年来の友人だと説明。安倍氏の遺族を尊重し、総統府としては頼氏の関連のスケジュールについてコメントや説明はしないと述べた。

日本側は頼氏の訪日について、私人としての訪問だとしている。

頼氏は12日に都内で行われる葬儀に出席する予定。
