On August 29, Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan encountered an unexplained issue that resulted in the suspension of operations at 12 out of its 14 factories in Japan. After implementing emergency backup networks, production resumed the following day.
While Toyota has experienced system failures in the past, this incident is the most severe and widespread one. The timing of this event coincides with China's comprehensive protest against Japan, under the consent of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), regarding the release of tritium into the ocean from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Toyota has stated that it cannot confirm whether it fell target to a cyberattack. However, the recovery process doesn't seem as straightforward as a system reinstallation, as Reuters mentioned the use of "back-up networks" instead of the more common "back-up systems."
If the terminology used by the reporters is indicative, it suggests that the breach might have affected not only software but also firmware and hardware. Naturally, there is suspicion regarding the involvement of "that nation," known for its tendency to politicize such events.  And "that nation" you know who...

日本豐田汽車在8/29因不明原因致使日本的14家工廠的12家停止運作。緊急採用備用網路後，今天重新恢復生產。

豐田雖然不是首次發生系統問題，此次卻是最嚴重與全面的。發生的時間點，與中國全面抗議日本福島核電廠的氚排放大海一事，在時間上相關。

豐田表示，目前無法確認是否受到「駭客攻擊」。可是，如何回復，似乎不像是系統重灌這樣簡單，路透社不用常見的「備用系統」，而用「備用網路」。
假使記者的用語有意義，表示不是軟體，而是從韌體到硬體都有可能被滲透。我們當然會懷疑喜歡將政治無限上綱的「辣個國家」。
