On
July 7th, a spokesperson for the French Presidency responded to a press interview
before the NATO summit, stating, "The 'N' and 'A' in NATO stand for 'North
Atlantic'." He cited Article 6 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which defines
the 'geographical area' of collective defense as the territories of North
American and European member countries. He added, "Due to principle
reasons (establishment of offices), I cannot agree" (referring to the
establishment of a NATO liaison office in Tokyo).
On the other hand, the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin in the Regular
Press Conference on July 12, 2023 expressed almost the same “NATO claims to be
a regional organization. Why then is NATO reaching beyond its geographical
scope laid down in its treaty, and making its foray into the Asia Pacific at a
faster pace?”
On the 12th, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed a similar view
to Macron: "NATO claims to be a regional organization, but it has broken
through the geographical scope stipulated in its own treaty and accelerated its
eastward march to the Asia-Pacific region."
Macron seems to have the same tone as Beijing,
or put another words that Beijing is echoing Macron’s stance on July 7, in the
moment of NATO vows units during the Vilnius Summit.
