The US Navy and the PLA reveal their
respective videos on the incident and claim the other side. We cannot, just from the video, tell the
truth except by looking at the flight track map.
However, we know one thing: fast aircraft have a responsibility to keep away
from the course of the low speed one to avoid a possible accident. The PLA Navy J-11 fighter is the fast one and
bears that responsibility.
Jet planes are feeble or maybe crash due to flying into the wake of the engine
by others. The PLA J-11 used its jet
wake turbulence maliciously to interfere with the flight of the US RC-135. On the other hand, US planes will never take
that suicidal course.
In the WIKI “Wake turbulence”: There have been serious accidents (see the next section) where pilots have attempted to salvage a landing after encountering moderate wake only to encounter severe wake turbulence that they were unable to overcome. Pilots should not depend on any aerodynamic warning, but if the onset of a wake is occurring, immediate evasive action is vital.
USINDOPACOM Statement on Unsafe Intercept of U.S. aircraft over South China Sea USINDOPACIFIC Command 20221229
On Dec. 21 (China Standard Time), a People’s Liberation Army - Navy J-11 fighter pilot performed an unsafe maneuver during an intercept of a U.S. Air Force RC-135 aircraft, which was lawfully conducting routine operations over the South China Sea in international airspace. The PLAN pilot flew an unsafe maneuver by flying in front of and within 20 feet of the nose of the RC-135, forcing the RC-135 to take evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision.
The U.S. Indo-Pacific Joint Force is dedicated to a free and open Indo-Pacific region and will continue to fly, sail and operate at sea and in international airspace with due regard for the safety of all vessels and aircraft under international law. We expect all countries in the Indo-Pacific region to use international airspace safely and in accordance with international law.
