“Old friend” works like a password for a non-Chinese in dealing with Beijing.  Whenever Beijing uses the keywords, it implies that Beijing will grant, or has given, the person unique treatments.  No wonder President Biden refuses to see that wordings on him, while Henry Kissinger loves to.

PRESIDENT BIDEN: ….And thank you for your congratulatory call when I won the election.  It was very gracious of you.

PRESIDENT XI:  (As interpreted.)  Good to see you, Mr. President, and your colleagues.

It’s the first time for us to meet virtually.  Although it’s not as good as a face-to-face meeting, I’m very happy to see my old friend.

PRESIDENT BIDEN:  Thank you.

Q    And the President, this summer, told Peter here that he does not consider President Xi an “old friend.”  How would you describe — (laughter) — how would you describe their relationship going into this meeting?

MS. PSAKI:  Well, I — I think — I can confirm, Peter, he still does not consider him an “old friend,” so that remains consistent.
