As expected, the puzzle of “who are we” rises amid the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  The governing authorities called itself "China" from the beginning that Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek exiled to Taiwan and resumed his proxy military occupation authority over Formosa and the Pescadores in 1950. 

Then "China" and "Taiwan" (or Formosa) were equally used here and there in the 1950s to early 1960s.  Soon the name "China" got its legitimate status in the 1960s to 1970s.
After the expelling of Chiang Kai-shek from the U.N. place, according to the Resolution 2758 of the General Assembly in 1971, and the agreement reached with IOC in 1981, "Chinese Taipei" replaced "China," became the name in the international organizations.
The governing authorities of Taiwan then called itself “Chung Hwa (Chinese),” meaning it is a "cultural and ethnical China," but a "political or social China."
“Chung Hwa,” has become a popular wording describing “us,” for two to three decades.  Almost all Taiwanese people used the name without questioning, convincing themselves that “Chinese” is different from “China.”
Taiwanese people are getting more confident, and the identity of Taiwan is even stronger than before in the decade.  People are using Taiwan naturally, while “Chung Hwa” looks old-fashioned if not outdated.
It is regret to see Johnny Chiang, the Chairperson of KMT, used “Chung Hwa” to indicate the Taiwanese Athletes to Tokyo 2020.  That is OK, in the first place, being old-fashioned is nothing.  However, to distinguish KMT from DPP, or being hijacked by KMT’s ideology, Jiang chose to challenge DPP with the name of Taiwan or “Chung Hwa.”  The name may be an issue representing how the parties speculate the future of Taiwan, but not to become a political debate at present.  It looks to me that Johnny Chiang is yet to manage a strategic issue like this.
