China’s
diplomatic letter counterattacking on Taiwan’s participation of WHA
Dr. Tedros Adhanorm Ghebreysus
Director General
World Health Organization
Geneva
Your Excellency,
We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to
you and the secretariat for your efforts and dedications in leading the global
fight against Covid-19 pandemic.
At this critical time, the world needs to solidarity and cooperation more
than ever, and the upcoming virtual de minis WHA 73 on May 18-19 2020 will
provide us a unique opportunity to further enhance the joint efforts. However we are very concerned to learn that
certain member states may intend to raise the so-called Taiwan’s participation
issue during its opening, which runs counter to the general agreement among
member states that no controversial issues shall be considered during the
virtual Assembly.”
The participation of Taiwan, China in WHA [the World Health Assembly]
should be handled in accordance to the one-China principle, as embodied in the
UNGA Resolution 2758 and WHA Resolution 25.1 and recognized by the
international community as a whole. It
is the local authority in Taiwan, China who bar themselves from participating
in WHA by refusing to accept the one-China principle. On the other hand, necessary agreements have
been made to ensure that there is no disears prevention gap in Taiwan,
China. In face of the unprecedented
challenges, we should focus on saving lives and not be distracted by political
manipulation.
We appreciate the position of Your Excellency on adhering to on-China
principle, and are ready to work with Your Excellency and the secretariat to
preserve the integrity of the virtual de
minimis WHA, safe guard the collective interests of all member states of
the Organization and prevent the Assembly from being disrupted.
Please accept, Excellency, the assurance of our highest considerations.
