To hold the Chair concurrently or automatically? Who is the bumbler after all?

One day before taking the Presidential office, MYJ was interviewed by TV journalist on the question if he would hold KMT’s Chair concurrently.  His answer was very tricky and easily misguided the audience.

Journalist:  Will you hold the KMT Chair concurrently once you take the office as the President?

MYJ:  Of course, I shall not.  How could it be possible for me to hold the Chair of KMT automatically?  KMT’s Chair is elected by the party members directly.  The one who becomes the President will not hold the position as Party Chair automatically.  KMT Party Constitution does not allow such an institution.

To hold a position “concurrently” and to take it “automatically” sound alike in Mandarin.

The journalists misunderstood MYJ’s oral tricky answer.

As always, MYJ is “honest,” on purpose.  He is trickier than what most of us can imagine.

2007年10月3日馬英九在被問及總統與黨主席一事時回答：

記者問：未來擔任總統之後您會「兼任」黨主席？

馬回答：我當然不會啊！我怎麼會去「接任」黨主席呢？因為黨主席它是要由黨員直接選舉的，不是當的總統就能當黨主席，我們國民黨沒有這樣的制度。

當時人們以為總統講的是「兼任」（不信，請看該 YouTube 的標題「說謊常業犯-中國台北總統馬英九選前說：絕不兼黨主席」），但實際上馬英九講的是「接任」。這顯然是一個套好招的訪問。

馬是對的。無論2013年11月10日之前或之後。
