As we witness President Yoon Suk Yeol of the Republic of Korea's state visit to the United States, it is a cause for sadness.
If Taiwan were a country with a clear statehood, our president's, from Lee Teng-Hui to Tsai Ing-Wen, visit to the U.S. could be conducted in a more formal and transparent manner, with government officials and business leaders engaging in official talks, signing agreements, and issuing joint statements, without the need for secretive, private activities.
Taiwan is crucial to the U.S. and Japan but also to the civilized, democratic world. Taiwan is important not only as an object, and the people of Taiwan as a subject are crucial. However, Taiwan has been oppressed for a long time and is unable to defend its interests and those of its people in an official capacity, which puts Taiwan at a disadvantage in international trade and exchanges.
Therefore, the international community that oppresses Taiwan, not let Taiwan be a state due to national interests of the international community, be it the U.S., Japan, or Europe, has a duty to protect Taiwan and the basic interests of its people from being unilaterally and violently changed. On the other hand, the Taiwanese government should at least call on the U.S., Japan, and Europe to fulfill their obligations in this regard, which is not an additional request but rather our right to demand so.

假使台灣具有國格，我們總統訪美也可以是這樣——官員與商界正式上桌會談、簽署協議、發表公報，無須偷偷摸摸，只能私人身分在私人場合活動。
但是台灣很重要——對美日、對文明而民主的世界而言，不僅是作為客體的台灣很重要，作為主體的台灣人民也很重要；但台灣長期被壓抑著，無法以官方身分捍衛自己與人民的利益，等於以不公平的束縛，與國際社會交流與貿易。
因此，壓抑台灣的國際社會，要是美日歐，有義務保障台灣與台灣人民的基本利益不被片面的暴力改變。相對的，台灣政府至少要呼籲：美日歐各國有這樣的責任，這不是額外的請求，而是我們有權利如此要求。
