歐巴馬任內的美國駐中國大陸大使包可士十五日在二○二四年香港中美論壇發表演說指稱，川普是個「交易者」（dealmaker），喜歡在外交事務上達成協議，或許能促成俄烏間的協議，也不排除他會與中國在台灣問題上達成某種協議。

包可士詋，大家都說華府唯一的兩黨共識，就是對中強硬。「熱中與中國達成協議」的川普，若決定與中方達成決定性協議，勢必需動用大量政治資本。

拜登任內的前美國亞太副助卿華自強也認同川普是個交易者。華自強認為，交易者川普在美中關係議題上可保持靈活性，但兩國正處於結構性競爭狀態，在經濟和安全等領域無可避免地趨向對抗，加上各自外交機構都缺乏推動彼此和平共存的計畫與想法，即使兩國領袖有意達成協議，也沒足夠的專業官僚從旁輔佐。
