The R/V Thomas G. Thompson (T-AGOR-23) moored at Kaohsiung on October 16, or precisely at zulutime  2018-10-14 23:56.  It is a research vessel, in between military vessel and civilian, own by the US Navy but operated by the University of Washington.

However, this is the latest move of the “immediate precautionary landing” of two F-18s the US took on April 1, 2015.

Also it is a practice of the agreement of Taiwan and AIT concluded on September 2017, in which the US Navy vessels may receive the supply and service by Taiwanese company somewhere between Kaohsiung and Siao Liouciou.

By the way, a Netizen left a message saying that the RV Sonne(2014), a German Research Vessel, is in Kaohsiung about the same time, from October 15 to 17.  As I checked the website, RV Sonne (2014) is currently at offshore Kaohsiung.

16日上午，一艘重隸3250噸的屬美國海軍研究辦公室的科學研究船（T-AGOR-23），目前靠港高雄港。

一艘隸屬美國海軍研究辦公室的科學研究船，靠港高雄港9號碼頭。該船體具備遙控水下載具、可監測水文資料。此時靠港接近美國11月大規模演習前，時機點非常特殊。

前海軍新江艦長呂禮詩透過貼文説，該科學研究船為美國大學暨國家海洋實驗室（University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System, UNOLS）使用，並具遙控水下載具（Remotely Operated Vehicle, ROV）及自主式水下載具（autonomous underwater vehicle, AUV），可監測鹽度、濕度跟溫度等水文資料。

呂禮詩也表示，隸屬於美國海軍研究辦公室的科學研究船，預計於18日晚間23點離港。
